In 2011, Kwami had his sights set on becoming a rocket scientist. Emily was in the midst of her third year of studying development economics at Harvard, frustrated by the disconnect between the academic literature and the realities of poverty on the ground. Coming from different worlds and backgrounds, they traveled to northern Ghana together with MIT’s D-Lab. There, they were united by a desire to take on the challenges smallholder farmers face daily without access to patient capital, quality inputs, technical training, or guaranteed markets.

During their time in Ghana, Kwami and Emily were introduced to what was known locally as “the miracle tree.” The tree thrives in arid climates. It helps the crops around it grow better. It can be intercropped with subsistence crops mitigating risk to farmers. The leaves, with more vitamin A than carrots, more protein than eggs, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach have the potential to end malnutrition and provide a stable food source to farmers. The oil seeds, rich in anti-oxidants and moisturizing agents produce one of nature’s finest cosmetic oils for hair and skin care.

The more they learned about the harmful chemicals in synthetic cosmetics and hair relaxers, the more passionate they became about bringing conscious consumers a natural alternative that actually worked. Putting their engineering and business acumen to work, they went back to Cambridge to devise a proprietary extraction system that could be brought closer to the farmers, adding value and jobs on the ground, and producing the highest quality natural oil nature has to offer.

True Moringa has planted over 2,000,000 tree and increased  local farmers income ten-times.

Popmasks were born…

So what’s in a Starry Eyes mask?

The mask itself is made from non woven cotton, each heat cell contains iron powder, vermiculite, activated carbon, salt and water, all naturally occurring ingredients. The mask is fragrance-free and free from artificial ingredients.

When the pouch is opened, the iron powder inside heat cells reacts with oxygen in the air causing it to heat up gently. The mask reaches a maximum temperature of 100.4 F or 38 C and stays at this temperature for at least 20 minutes.

The Starry Eyes cotton mask is a reusable sleep mask. However, the iron cells will only heat up once. The woven cotton mask and ingredients are naturally occurring and are biodegradable, the foil pouch and card packaging are recyclable.

Ance or Rosacea?

Have you struggled with Rosacea? Flushed cheeks, bumps on your cheeks and forehead that are not pimples and show up whenever?

What is Rosacea? In short, Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. (Mayo Clinic)I have always had flushes cheeks as far back as I could remember. I started noticing red bumps on my checks and nose around the age of 27. At first I thought it was acne and I need to change out my bedding every few days instead of once a week. So I started making those changes, and noticed that nothing was changing, until one day the “acne” went away. So I thought it was a fluke. A few months later I had another flare up, and this time it was worse and everything I tried was not working. I thought, okay maybe it is the dairy – which I already knew that it was causing my PCOS cystic acne to go crazy, so I cut out all of the dairy for a month, but nothing happened. So I was at a loss.

I started doing some intense research on anything and everything it could be, along with documenting my out breaks with pictures and what I was doing when the outbreaks occurred. I started to notice with the research I was conducting that my symptoms were similar to those of Rosacea. I started treating my outbreaks as Rosacea (I did not receive a formal diagnoses from a dermatologist, I have self-diagnosed myself). I noticed when I am stressed (which happens a lot due to my engineering job) and I drink red wines with high sulfate content then my Rosacea breaks become intense and last for four to six weeks. The stress from my job is not something that I can control, but my wine consumption has changed and I have cut out drinking any and all red wine. I am currently staying away from all alcohol to all for my body to cleanse and my Rosacea to calm down.

Here is a list of others factors that cause Rosacea to becoming inflamed and irritated.

  • Hot drinks and spicy foods
  • Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
  • Temperature extremes
  • Sunlight or wind
  • Emotions
  • Exercise
  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications
  • Various cosmetic products

Risk Factors for Rosacea

Anyone can develop rosacea. But you may be more likely to develop it if you:

  • Are female
  • Have light skin, particularly if it has been damaged by the sun
  • Are over age 30
  • Smoke
  • Have a family history of rosacea

Food and Skin

Does the food we eat really affect our skin?

How many times have you heard that junk food of any kind cause’s breakouts and skin irritations? I know I certainly have. But have you ever been told that foods like yogurt, onions and wine can cause you to break out and have skin irritations?

Your skin is a-tell all for how your body processes the foods and liquids you ingest. Why is your skin an indicator?

The short version

When your body breaks down the things we consume it needs two key hormones to help process. The two key hormones are Testosterone and Insulin. Testosterone is used to help burn the calories that the food contains and Insulin is to help keep your blood sugar in check. When you consume food that causes your sugar levels to spike, such as simple carbs, this will cause your Insulin levels to rise. What happens when your Insulin levels rise? The hormone Testosterone is generated to help combat the levels of Insulin and to balance your body out, and when your Insulin levels are too high your body generates an excessive amount of Testosterone to compensate. When your body produces extra Testosterone and your body cannot absorb it, it is left un-attended within your body to wreak havoc.  One of the many ways Testosterone loves to mess with you is through your skin, it causes cystic acne that can be found on your jaw line, neck, back, and even your chest.

The second thing that most people do not realize is when they eat food that causes bloating, gas or diarrhea is irritating the digestive system. This irritation within your digestive tract can cause skin irritations, inflammation, and breakouts. This may not be the case for everyone. Those of you that suffer from Rosacea, Eczema or itchy skin ever notice that your skin irritations get worse when you eat certain things? Never thought about it before, you might start now. When I eat fruits high in glucose my Eczema goes crazy, showing up on my love handles and arms. My Rosacea, which appeared out of no-where when I turned 28, gets inflamed when drink wine………..Yes, I have a lot of skin issues: both my Eczema and Rosacea where passed down to me from my mom and my cystic acne is a byproduct of my PCOS.

I am by no means a perfect eater when comes to helping my acne and skin irritations. I still enjoy pasta, white rice and I LOVE LOVE my Cab Sav. I have opted to cut out the prepackaged foods, soda and candy to help my skin and digestive system.

I want to share my experiences and knowledge that I have acquired through the last eight years of research and doctor visits, and by no means am I a medical doctor and everything I have spoken about in this article is from my own research, trial and error, and family medical history.

Taking Care of Your Skin During Quarantine

Whether you are personally suffering from a cold or a flu, like COVID-19, taking care of loved ones knocked down by sickness, or just self isolating and bored at home, this season is crucial for both our physical and mental health. When we’re sick, we do as much as possible to get better quick, and sometimes our daily skincare rituals become the last thing we want to do. And for some, like myself, who suffer from sensitive skin, may find their skin endures more havoc during a cold or flu.

Unfortunately, sickness is not the only thing that takes us away from taking care of our skin. Due to the pandemic, most of us find ourselves at home  in self isolation. Along with our physical health, this time can be extremely taxing on our mental health. This is just another reason why we should take some extra time to give our skin the love it needs. April’s Naked Beauty box is the perfect collection of products for this cold and flu season and so let’s get into how some of these products will give your skin the much needed TLC after recovering from sickness or trying to survive self isolation at home.

With sickness, comes a lack of sleep. To help combat the effects of sleepless nights, the No Makeup caffeinated eye cream is the perfect addition to your morning routine. For those who haven’t found themselves sick this season can incorporate this product into their morning skincare to help with dark under eye bags.

Dehydrated skin is another side effect from sickness. Constantly blowing our noses and wiping our faces raw can cause some serious dryness that moisturizer alone will not fix. The One Percent hydrating  serum gives your skin the added hydration it needs after a rough season of the sniffles.

Another great way to get a boost of hydration is this month’s mask. The Soon Skincare sheet mask not only delivers  hydration to our skin but it helps us stop in the midst of the chaos and give ourselves 15 minutes to relax. Not only is this great for the skin, but it good for our mental health. Sometimes we just need a minute, or 15, to get into a better head space.

I know when I’m sick, my lips suffer the most, becoming extremely dry and cracked. The Naked Beauty box features the Sara Happ lip scrub as a free  add-on for first time subscribers. With ingredients like jojoba oil,  this product is a must have to help remove the dead skin from our lips and kickstart the recovery process. The Laneige Sleep lip mask  is another product from March’s box that is ideal for helping our dry lips recover or become an essential addition to a healthy nighttime skincare routine.

So, whether you are recovering from a cold or flu, or you’re in need of how to take care of yourself during this pandemic, the Naked Beauty box is here for you.

Stay safe and be well,

Skincare, Skincare, and MORE SKINCARE

Why is a skincare routine important? Because it helps protect the skin from our external environments which speeds up aging! That’s why it’s crucial to take care of your skin everyday, even if you’re only 20 and have it never had a pimple in your life. Honestly, I keep my daytime and nighttime routines simple. Mostly because I’m still discovering products that work and don’t work for me! I can be particular about what I apply to my face, but I still love trying new products. That’s just another reason why I love The Naked Beauty Box. Their products are perfect for my skincare needs especially when my skin needs a little extra TLC. Now, I know when I first discovered how badly I needed a skincare routine, I was confused as to what to apply, how and why. I felt like the more products I applied the dirtier my face would be. Or the more clogged my pores would get. It felt very counterintuitive until a dermatologist explained to me why we apply certain things, how to apply them and most importantly, WHEN to apply each product. Yes, there is a purpose and an order to everything, I promise it’s not just some marketing strategy to get us to buy more. Below you will find the order you should apply your skincare products for the morning and evening. You will also find both my daytime and nighttime skincare routines and products I use and love. Enjoy!

Both the Jade Face Roller and the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask came in this month’s Naked Beauty Box. They have become new to my routine and honestly, they’re staples! After applying my night oil I love using the roller to get a nice massage all over my face. I also like using it on mornings when my eyes may be puffy or my face feels a little swollen (which is rare, but does happen). I’ve been using the lip mask for about a week and it has transformed my dry cracked lips to smooth and hydrated lips. I haven’t been able to find anything that works as magical as the Laneige mask so I’ll be stocking up!
